We Were Liars is a phenomenal book! It completely blew me away! The author's writing is so beautiful; it's almost as if the way she carves words to stun us and pull at our heartstrings is magic. The book is about a rich family that spends every summer on a private island off the coast of Massachusetts. And trust me, there is quite a bit of drama in that family. That's all I'm going to say before the non-spoiler section. It's honestly way better to go into this novel knowing very little about the plot. If you've read this book, keep reading. If you haven't, GO READ IT!!
Now, I assume all those still reading have read the book because I will now be discussing it in depth (that means plenty of spoilers!) so here's your last warning!
Lets start with the very beginning. Instantly, the writing grabbed me. I adore the way the author strung together such short and simple sentences that contained so much emotion. Also, her metaphors were incredible! As soon as I began chapter one, I was taken aback when she said that her father shot her. I had to set down the book and take a deep breath. Once I resumed reading, I realized that it was merely a metaphor. It definitely took me a while to get used to her style of writing because of the strong and powerful metaphors she used, and not only that but also the way she used them.
Now, the Sinclairs... What can I say? They are introduced as the epitome of rich families with glorious houses and smiles on the outside, but who know what they hide on the inside? Apparently, tons. This family intrigued me. I feel as if that I knew from the beginning this would be the "dirt under the money" type of rich family, but the author still found a way to surprise me and capture my attention.
Almost the whole book leads up to one final event: the revelation. I'm still stunned and I finished reading this book two weeks ago. At first I was certain that the Liars were hallucinations and it never crossed my mind that they may be ghosts. I don't know why but I didn't consider that until I started watching book talks on youtube. Now, I'm not as sure. However, I do stand more firmly with the belief that they were hallucinations than ghosts. But nonetheless, the author deserves a standing ovation. I was fortunate enough to go into the book without any knowledge or spoilers and I think that make the story a lot more enjoyable.
The only thing I did not like about the story, however, was the fact that we never got an explanation for why they were called Liars. I understand that they lied among themselves, but how did the adults and the Littles label them as so?
Anyways, I give both the story and the writing a full FIVE out of five stars!!!! I do not give this rating out easily. In fact, I haven't done this in quite some time.
